Vatican Assassin: Synopsis

BERNARD CAMPION’S friends call him “BC”. Not that he has a lot of friends. You don’t make a lot of friends when you’re an assassin. His mission this time: eliminate the governor of Luna Prime, Meredith McEntyre. His superiors tell him she’s been sympathizing with the enemy, the Universal Islamic Nation (UIN). His superiors? The Office of Papal Operations, the OPO. BC works for the Pope.

    We meet BC in 2109, a time of war. BC is “officially” assigned as PR man to the Vatican Mission on Luna Prime, the major city on The Moon. That’s his cover. He seems to be just a mild mannered, young,  twenty-something priest working for the New catholic Church on public relations. But he’s really a weapon pointed at the UIN by the NcC and their Earth based allies, the Universal Trade Zone, the UTZ.

    BC’s initial mission succeeds. McEntyre’s killed. But suspisions are aroused.

    Meredith McEntyre’s widower Daniel McEntyre, himself a suspected UIN sympathizer, tries to get the new Governor of Luna Prime, Marc Edwards, to investigate BC in the matter of his wife’s death. BC tries to deflect the inquiry.

    Mars is securely in the hands of the UIN. It’s their home and the base for their ships. Life there is hard. The living quarters on Mars are overcrowded, resources strained. Most of Earth’s Moslem population has emigrated to Mars. They were subjugated and brutally dominated by the UTZ for years back on Earth. They took over Mars. And with Mars as their base they’re striking back. The UIN’s fleet is mostly made up of stolen maglev ships. They possess only a few of the newer transpace ships, the one’s the UTZ uses to jump quickly from Earth to Mars. Still, the UIN fleet of pirated and adapted vessels has been attacking targets on Earth, in Orbit, and on Luna Prime.

    After BC assassinates McEntyre, the UIN launches an attack on Luna Prime. Just as it starts, BC is discovered! An undercover UIN agent on Luna Prime surfaces and records B.C. as he reports back to the Pope on the kill. He sees her, panics, and chases after her. The UIN agent gets away. BC is nearly killed. But BC suggests that the UIN agent is to blame for McEntyre’s death, that the UIN attacked to allow their agent to escape. His PR bluff seems to work.

    The Vatican is also targeted by a UIN assault. This is the first time the Vatican has been directly targeted. It’s not immediately apparent why. But the OPO fears they have been discovered by the UIN. They fear the Vatican is now a target because OPO involvement in UTZ  operations has been proven with the recording of BC by the escaped UIN agent. But the UIN make no public statements regarding the OPO and BC.

    So BC remains based on Luna Prime. The OPO now fears his profile has been raised. His position is risky. He tries to keep a low profile as he recuperates from injuries sustained in the chase and tries to dig up info on the UIN agent who got away.  He also seriously works at his job as PR Flack for Cardinal Andersen. The Pope wants him to strengthen his cover.
